Discovering a Enchanted World of the famous storyteller's Birthplace in Denmark
Reflected back at me, I appear to be wearing oversized shimmering pantaloons, perceptible just for my eyes. Kids play in a water feature pretending to be mermaids, and adjacent sits a talking pea in a display case, alongside a imposing mound of mattresses. It represents the world of the beloved author (1805-1875), a leading 19th century’s widely adored storytellers. I’m in the city of Odense, located on Fyn in the south of this Nordic country, to investigate Andersen’s enduring legacy in his birthplace many decades after his death, and to find a few magical stories of my own.
The Museum: H.C. Andersen's House
The H.C. Andersen Museum is the town's museum honoring the storyteller, incorporating his first home. An expert states that in earlier iterations of the museum there was minimal emphasis on the author's tales. His personal history was explored, but The Little Mermaid were absent. For tourists who visit the city looking for narrative enchantment, it was somewhat disappointing.
The redevelopment of the city center, redirecting a major road, created the chance to rethink how the local celebrity could be commemorated. An international design contest gave Japanese firm the Kengo Kuma team the contract, with the curators’ new approach at the center of the design. The unique wood-paneled museum with interwoven spiralling spaces debuted to significant attention in 2021. “We’ve tried to design an environment where we avoid discussing the writer, but we communicate similarly to him: with humour, sarcasm and outlook,” notes the expert. The landscape design follow this philosophy: “It’s a garden for explorers and for large beings, it's created to give you a sense of smallness,” he explains, a challenge realized by strategic landscaping, experimenting with verticality, size and numerous twisting trails in a surprisingly compact space.
Andersen's Impact
Andersen wrote multiple autobiographies and frequently provided conflicting accounts. The museum takes this approach to heart; often the perspectives of his acquaintances or excerpts of letters are shown to subtly challenge the writer's personal account of incidents. “The writer is the guide, but his account isn't always accurate,” notes the representative. The effect is a fascinating whirlwind tour of Andersen’s life and work, thought processes and favorite tales. This is provocative and whimsical, for mature visitors and youngsters, with a extra lower-level imaginary world, Ville Vau, for the youngest visitors.
Discovering the City
In the real world, the small city of this Danish city is charming, with historic pathways and historic timber buildings finished in bright colours. The writer's influence is everywhere: the traffic lights show the author with his iconic top hat, brass footprints offer a complimentary Andersen walking tour, and there’s a art walk too. Each summer this commitment peaks with the regular storytelling event, which honors the writer's impact through art, dance, theatre and music.
This year, the week-long celebration had hundreds of events, many were complimentary. During my time in this place, I meet colorful performers on stilts, fantastical beings and an writer impersonator sharing tales. I hear empowering poetry and observe an incredible evening show including graceful performers coming down from the city building and hanging from a crane. Upcoming events in the coming months are presentations, family art workshops and, expanding the oral history further than the writer, the city’s yearly enchantment celebration.
Each wonderful enchanted locations require a castle, and Fyn contains 123 castles and estates across the island
Pedaling Through History
Like most of Denmark, cycles are the ideal method to get about in this town and a “cycling highway” curves through the urban core. Starting at Hotel Odeon, I ride to the public waterside bathing area, then into the countryside for a circuit around Stige Ø, a tiny landmass connected by causeway to the mainland. City residents relax with food here in the evening, or enjoy a peaceful time fishing, aquatic activities or swimming.
Back in town, I dine at a local eatery, where the culinary offerings is based on author-inspired concepts and tales. The literary work the national ode is highlighted at the restaurant, and proprietor the restaurateur recites passages, translated into English, as he presents each course. Such encounters commonplace in my days in the city, the island inhabitants love a yarn and it feels as though narrating is always offered here.
Historic Estate Tours
Every excellent enchanted locations require a palace, and the island features 123 castles and manor houses throughout the region. Going on excursions from Odense, I visit Egeskov Castle, the region's best-preserved moated palace. Although large sections are available for tours, this historic site is also the personal dwelling of the noble family and his partner, the royal resident. I contemplate if she can feel a small legume through a mound of {mattresses
