Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
