Thunder Launch Title Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Triumph
The Thunder star joined the Thunder in 2019.
The Thunder's star player delivered the game-winning baskets deep into a second overtime period as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their championship campaign with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the champions a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with 39 points and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.
But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points, played a major role alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Grit and defense," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did enough defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Prior to the tip-off, the team's title banner was raised at their home court, while the players were awarded their title rings.
The Thunder defeated the Pacers in the previous season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their first title since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the opportunity to secure some payback on Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Detroit Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to prevent his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 for the road team.
The Lakers were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer LeBron James as he recovers from a back issue.
